March 1, 2010 - Home - I love birthday cakes. But it’s a slippery slope decorating these for an occasion - ranging from the contrived and downright absurd to the lavish, decadent pieces you stare at endlessly. And most times, they taste as atrocious as they look.
I was searching feverishly for a file photo I could talk about when I stumbled upon this piece. I remember the day this small, crudely decorated cake was given to me. Mouth agape, I was ready to bash the poor excuse for a cake before I was rudely interrupted: “It’s small and ugly, but I decorated it myself to show how much I love you - imperfections and all.”
The cake did not last a day, but I took enough photos and stored in enough back-up drives to make sure it was never forgotten. Some cakes you eat because they taste splendidly. Some you buy because they’re pretty and you can afford it. Others - like this one - was bought to remind me of what was loved.
P.S. The cake tasted horrible.
